The ramblings of a bearded crazy person

Gabe at the GDC

Gabe Newell at GDC 2010

This was news on Thursday. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, (or don’t read any gaming news at all) you know about this. But Imma post about it anyway.

I was watching this live as it happened. The GDC awards were going on, and I was kinda half-listening while doing other stuff, but I started paying more attention when Gabe Newell got the floor. He talked, and then he got to talking about the Portal ARG that was going on. He was going to say something cool — and then his computer had a BSOD.

Or did it? In true Valve fashion, the BSOD was staged. After the authentic-looking BSOD popped up, the text changed to:

GLaDOS

A fatal exception E2 has occurred at E4E2 : D7C5D5C4 in E4D 5E3(C9) *
D3C5C5C5. The current application will be terminated.

* Press any key to flood the facility with deadly neurotoxins.
* Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again to reinstate testing. You will lose any
Non-vital personnel and their progress through the current test.

Press any key to continue _

That’s some hex there. Translated, it reads: 226 228 226 : 215 197 213 196 228 213 227 ( 201 ) * 211 197 197 197. That itself, is EBCDIC. When it is translated, we finally get:

SUSPEND UNTIL EEE

So… We gotta wait until E3 for something to heppen? That’s three months away. Dang…
